The Adventures of Martin Tyrone Sanchez Dupree

Getting Martin Tyrone from the bottom drawer of my desk to publication has been an adventure in and of itself.  I am grateful to God though that I can now say 'It is finished'.  I've discovered something really special since I started to do public readings of Martin Tyrone---grown ups like Martin too, especially men.  I see that same little twinkle in the eyes of grown men that shines in the eyes of boys when they hear Martin say or do something they might have done or said.

The other thing I hear a lot of people say is "my sister needs that for her son--he hates books".

Since people keep asking where I got the name Martin Tyrone Sanchez Dupree, I'll tell you and you tell your neighbor and so on and so on.  When this story started to form in my mind I knew that Martin's antics and thoughts were universal.  It just made sense to craft him as a bi-racial kid.  The story takes place during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, hence the name Martin.  I also happen to think the name Tyrone is pure fun and since there are many people I love named Sanchez, the combination was irresistable.  Now the mystery is where I got the name Dupree.  I'm not sharing that!

 

I am also happy to introduce you to yet another extraordinary illustrator named Derrick Polk.  He's been in my life for a lot of years and I affectionately refer to him as my son.  I couldn't bring these characters to life without the prodigious talents of artists like Derrick Polk or Eric L. Ward from my Lucille series.
